Living on the Costa del Sol year-round

Plenty of people buy here for holidays and end up staying. If you are weighing the Costa del Sol as a permanent or long-stay base rather than a summer bolt-hole, here is the honest picture.

The climate does most of the selling

Around 300 days of sun a year and mild winters mean the outdoor life runs from February to December, not just August. Winters are quiet and warm enough for golf, walking and terrace lunches.

It is genuinely international

Residents from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and beyond mean you can live, bank and socialise in English, with international schools (British, German, Scandinavian, international-baccalaureate) across the coast. That lowers the barrier for families relocating.

Healthcare is strong

Public healthcare is good, and there is a dense network of private clinics and English-speaking doctors, which is why many retirees choose the area.

Getting around and away

Málaga airport connects to most of Europe year-round, the AVE high-speed train links Málaga to Madrid in under three hours, and the coastal road ties the towns together. Day-to-day you will want a car outside the town centres.

The trade-offs

July and August are hot and busy, the smaller western resorts can feel seasonal in deep winter, and bureaucracy (NIE, residency, utilities) takes patience. None of it is a dealbreaker, but go in clear-eyed.

For year-round living, buyers tend to favour towns with real community — Estepona, Mijas, parts of Marbella — over purely seasonal pockets. Tell us how you want to live and we will point you to the right ones.

Read the area guides for Estepona, Mijas and Marbella, then the homes in Estepona, Mijas and Marbella.
